Square and new roof in Anoeta

The Herriko Plaza is the most important square in Anoeta, being the nerve centre of life in this Gipuzkoan town of two thousand inhabitants. Located in the centre of the town, where the facilities and shops for the daily life of the town are to be found, it is a space with life and a diversity of users. Our project is located between the Herriko Plaza, the church of San Joan, the pelota court and the sports field.   In order to resolve the problems and doubts of the municipality regarding the intervention, the Town Council invited the population to a participatory process in which ZÜR studio worked as a technical advisor. The conclusion was the need to eliminate the architectural barriers in the square, create a fluid route between all the spaces and later, in a second phase, to put a roof over the square.

In the area in which we have intervened there were architectural barriers that meant that the route between these spaces was not accessible. The difference in height between the Herriko Plaza and the sports court was resolved with a 2m high wall and to get down there were stairs and a ramp with a 17% slope in poor condition.
